Analysis of The Use of Slang Word Formation in Drake’s Song Lyrics on “Certified Lover Boy” Album

Abstract

The title of this study is “Analysis of the Use of Slang Word Formation in Drake’s Song Lyrics on “Certified Lover Boy” Album”. This study deals with the slang word analysis in selected Drake’s song lyrics on “Certified Lover Boy” album. This study aims to identify the types of slang word found in Drake’s song lyrics on “Certified Lover Boy” album, to find out the meaning of slang word in Drake’s song lyrics on “Certified Lover Boy” album, and to analyze the slang word which are realized in Drake’s song lyrics on “Certified Lover Boy” album. Descriptive qualitative research was applied in this study. The data were taken from 7 songs lyrics on Drake’s “Certified Lover Boy” album. The data were analyze using Yule’s theory by identifying the song into four types of process, classifying the word in each type of slang, and analyzing the data into the slang word. There were 89 words found in the songs based on three types of slang that found in selected 7 songs lyrics on Drake’s “Certified Lover Boy” album. Those types are blending, clipping, and compounding. In 7 songs lyrics on Drake’s “Certified Lover Boy” album, the researcher concluded that the most common type of slang found was clipping with a percentage of 61% more than blending 29%, and compounding 10%. The researcher would like to suggest to the reader especially for students of English Department to analyze slang more deeply, not only the types and meanings of slang words in other literary work such as film, drama, novel, poem, etc.
