Metaphor in Lany’s Song Lyrics

Abstract

 Language is a means of verbal communication and is a system of arbitrary sound symbols. Language is used by humans to convey thoughts, ideas, and feelings. The main function of language is as a means of communication and interacting with other people in everyday life (Chaer, 1995: 4). This method is used to determine the types of metaphors and the meanings of metaphorical expressions contained in the lingual units that contain metaphors in Lany's song album. Then the technique used to analyze the data is the determinant sorting technique. Every unit of language that contains metaphors and the meanings of metaphorical expressions found in Lany's songs is analyzed to find the types of metaphors and the meanings of these metaphorical expressions. From the results of the study, it was found that there were four types of metaphors and (22) the meanings of metaphorical expressions found in Lany's song lyrics. Regarding the types of metaphors and the meaning of metaphorical expressions in Lany's song lyrics, it can be written because there are four types of metaphors in Lany's song lyrics, namely anthropomorphic metaphors, synesthetic metaphors, abstract or concrete to abstract metaphors, and animal metaphors. Of the four types of metaphors according to Stephen Ullmann, metaphorical abstraction is the type of metaphor that Lany most often uses in composing songs, namely abstraction of as many as (13) data. While the type of metaphor that is rarely used is the type of animal metaphor only (1) data. For the types of synesthetic and anthropomorphic metaphors, there are (6) data and (2) data.
