Abstract

Congenital hypothyroidism is a metabolic disorder that may lead to impaired growth and neurodevelopment if not detected and treated early. Newborn Screening, particularly screening for Congenital Hypothyroidism (CH), is a crucial strategy to prevent disability and developmental delay in children. However, the coverage of CH screening at primary healthcare facilities remains suboptimal, partly due to limited maternal knowledge and lack of awareness regarding the importance of early screening. This community service activity aimed to improve the knowledge and awareness of mothers of newborns and healthcare providers regarding the importance of congenital hypothyroidism screening as an early detection effort. The activity was conducted in the working area of a primary healthcare center through health education sessions, interactive discussions, and technical assistance in newborn screening implementation. The participants included mothers of newborns and healthcare workers involved in maternal and child health services. The results showed an improvement in mothers’ understanding of the purpose, benefits, and timing of congenital hypothyroidism screening. In addition, healthcare providers demonstrated better readiness in performing screening procedures according to established standards. This community service activity contributes to increasing awareness among both the community and healthcare providers regarding the importance of early detection of congenital hypothyroidism, which is expected to support the prevention of growth and developmental disorders in children.

 

Abstrak

Hipotiroid kongenital merupakan salah satu kelainan metabolik bawaan yang dapat menimbulkan gangguan pertumbuhan dan perkembangan anak apabila tidak terdeteksi dan ditangani sejak dini. Skrining Bayi Baru Lahir (SBBL), khususnya skrining Hipotiroid Kongenital (SHK), menjadi upaya strategis dalam pencegahan kecacatan dan keterlambatan perkembangan pada anak. Namun, cakupan pelaksanaan skrining SHK di tingkat pelayanan kesehatan dasar masih belum optimal, salah satunya disebabkan oleh keterbatasan pengetahuan ibu dan kurangnya pemahaman mengenai pentingnya skrining pada bayi baru lahir. Kegiatan pengabdian kepada masyarakat ini bertujuan untuk meningkatkan pengetahuan dan pemahaman ibu bayi baru lahir serta tenaga kesehatan mengenai pentingnya skrining SHK sebagai upaya deteksi dini hipotiroid kongenital. Kegiatan dilaksanakan di wilayah kerja Puskesmas melalui metode edukasi kesehatan, diskusi interaktif, dan pendampingan pelaksanaan skrining bayi baru lahir. Sasaran kegiatan meliputi ibu bayi baru lahir dan tenaga kesehatan yang terlibat dalam pelayanan kesehatan ibu dan anak. Hasil kegiatan menunjukkan adanya peningkatan pemahaman ibu mengenai tujuan, manfaat, dan waktu pelaksanaan skrining SHK. Selain itu, tenaga kesehatan menunjukkan kesiapan yang lebih baik dalam melaksanakan prosedur skrining sesuai standar. Kegiatan pengabdian ini berkontribusi dalam mendukung peningkatan kesadaran masyarakat dan tenaga kesehatan terhadap pentingnya deteksi dini hipotiroid kongenital, sehingga diharapkan dapat mencegah terjadinya gangguan tumbuh kembang anak di kemudian hari.
